Through the looking glass
One of my favorite accidental philosophers is the Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice first encounters the cat after she’s become more and more harried by her adventures. She asks of him, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” the Cheshire Cat replied.
As she sat silently, Alice realized she was in a difficult spot. Out of boredom, she chased White Rabbit down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, a world of confusion and anarchy.
While exploring this new world, Alice followed strange creatures, endured endless tea parties, and matched wits with a foul-tempered monarch. She took potions that changed her appearance, and then, she realized she didn’t really know who she was.
Simply engaging with the world around her left Alice exhausted and dispirited. She had ventured into Wonderland alone and ended up hopelessly lost. If her story sounds familiar, maybe it’s time for a change.
